being a wallflower is good here.

When you think 1970s wallpaper, you might think of really awful colors and gaudy patterns. It all seems so … 30 years ago!

But When in Doubt, Draw Flowers has brought vintage wallpaper back — and not in a horrifying way:

It’s all so bright and cheery and flowery … and so much better on accessories than plastered on the wall (though you could do lots of decorating with the lampshades or coasters available from the shop). You can also decorate yourself with wallets, bags and jewelry.

Everything is unique and reusable, and my goodness, it’s nice to know you can bring back the 70s in a way that won’t make you cringe.

just a note to say …

… whatever you want! If you’re needing to drop someone a note (it is almost Valentine’s Day, after all) or just feel like stocking up on some cards for those days when you never know you’ll need one, perhaps you’d like to check these out:

You’ll find these handprinted and handmade cards at She’s Batty Designs. And if you head over there now, there’s a dollar sale where you can pick up most items for a buck! Better hurry, though, because the sale could end at any time!

There is a wide array of notecards and greeting cards in the shop, many of which could be used for any occasion. (Hence the stocking up of cards for those just-in-case moments.) Shop owner Jamie also does some custom work, including save the date cards, wedding invitations, Christmas cards and photo invites.

If you’re into making your own cards, you’ll also find some materials in the shop, including embossed papers and pre-cut die cuts of everything from people to animals to flowers — pretty much any theme you might need.

some light reading.

There’s nothing like curling up in a chair with a good book, or bringing a stack with you to read on a plane, train, or some other fun place.

But what about being able to wear books? How, you ask? Why, with these totally unique and wonderful earrings!

These earrings are made by Nicolette at The Small Book Company. The earrings are painstakingly handmade, with text paper on the inside, gold wire, and either recycled paper or Italian printed paper (the kind used on the inside of some leather-bound books) for the covers. Each pair is a nice accent, and they’re just an interesting concept for jewelry.

There are all kinds of colors and patterns, some bright and bold, some more neutral and subtle. But if you love books, there’s no better way to show it. If you fancy, you might even want to write small notes or draw small pictures in your earrings (the pages are blank).

As a bonus, each earring comes on a card that doubles as a mini book about the history of books!

books as art.

There’s nothing like walking into a used bookstore or your local library and perusing all those old cloth-bound books. (Or maybe you’re lucky enough to have a bunch lying around the house). They just don’t make hardbound the same way anymore. Old cloth-bound books rock! Sometimes they’d have weird stains on the covers, but that just added to the charm.

Now, you can get some kickass journals made out of said old books. Something like this:

(The man kind of reminds me of the Monopoly guy. What a cool cover this must have been. I wonder what kind of book it was. But I digress.)

This journal comes from Los Angeles-based Tyler Bender Book Company. Tyler takes old books, painstakingly resizes some of their covers — this particular blue journal happens to be 4 x 6 inches. But there are some full-sized books; there’s a recycled Bible cover adorning one of the journals.

A variety of papers fill the books. Those papers range from the plain lined paper from your school days (college-rule? wide-rule? aaaaaah!) to colored paper to old accounting ledgers (aaaaaaah again!). And each sheet of paper is hand-cut. (Considering most of these journals have 200 pages or so, that’s a heck of a lot of cutting.)

Each book is a surprise, and they’re almost too pretty to write or draw in!

one rad pickle.

Admittedly, I don’t like pickles. Too sour for me. But this is a pickle I can dig:

Or how about a pickle on a bike?

These wonderful characters are the work of Jack and Rita over at Mr. Pickles. The intro illustration/animation to their site alone is well worth the click — I’ve never seen a better-looking lime in my life.

Mr. Pickles has shirts, cards and even mugs featuring the cast of characters. There is even a plushy section where you can buy a stuffed t-bone steak for the favorite carnivore in your life. (Ham and lamb shank also available.)

Besides the shop, there are games and the blog to keep you entertained at the Mr. Pickles site, so go over there and ogle the food already.
